Gown and Garter Bridal Boutique is a custom styling studio; specializing in Bridal and Special Occasion Gowns. The boutique is located on Jacksonville’s Westside, providing a unique experience in Bridal shopping. Gown & Garter’s mission is to ensure you have the wedding gown or special gown of your dreams. We spoke with the owner, Pam Wilcox, about her boutique and here is what she had to say.

What made you decide to work in the wedding industry?

I fell in love with the wedding experience as a preteen and it never left. I was 12 or 13; my uncle had a very large southern wedding. Here is his bride wearing this white gown and all these ladies (my mother & aunts and her friends) are dressed in these beautiful long lavender pleated gowns and tea cup hats surrounding her. I was hooked on the glamour of weddings.

What do you love the very most about what you do?

I have a deep love and appreciation for the beauty in wedding gowns. In my humble opinion, a wedding gown is a representation of love. My goal is for every Bride to walk away feeling and saying, “I love me in this gown!”

Tell the brides-to- be your best wedding advice.

Breathe. When it gets down to that magic hour, the only thing that matters is the look on your significant others face and second you’re able to hold their hand and say, “I do!”  That’s it, nothing else matters. Remember to breathe and take it all in. Be present.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now?

What I am finding now Brides are straying away from traditional gown and going creative. I love it!! I am working with a bride who wants a yellow gown with a unique silhouette.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry?

Gown & Garter is looking at the present, the OtisJames Bride line, focus is to embrace and love all Brides’ beauty and curves.  In an industry where women are made to feel that they must confirm to the dress, let the dress be made to confirm to you. It’s all about you. It’s just that simple.

What is your favorite product or service that you offer brides? Please describe it.

I love gowns from weddings to special occasions. I love the way the right dress makes you feel wearing it. The topper is the look your significant other gives you when they feel your confidence.

Do you offer any other products or services?

Not only do we offer designer and custom gowns, we offer special occasion gowns, flower girl dresses, men’s dress shirts in array of colors, custom garters, lingerie, veils and accessories. We also host OtisJames Bride. This is a bridal gown line almost exclusively for curvy Brides. Gown and Garter also host a monthly Wedding Planning Workshop. It’s a 4 hour intensive workshop on focusing your Bride Style throughout your wedding.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding?

A Bride or anyone desiring a special made gown should reach out to Gown&Garter at least 4 to 6 months. If it is a designer gown, delivery will take 8 to 12 weeks. With custom gowns the process is similar but usually 8 to 10 weeks, which includes the consultations.

How long have your been doing what you do?

For over 4 years I was a wedding planner and it was a great experience but I always seem to focus more on the details of the gown and what everyone was wearing. I decided to focus on wedding gowns! I was always curious about the design and construction of the gown.

What are 5 adjectives that describe you and/or your business?

Custom, Unique, Customer-Centric, Fashion Forward and Passionate

Advantages of Having Off-Premise Catering at Your Wedding

Catering & Beverage, Uncategorized Comments Off on Advantages of Having Off-Premise Catering at Your Wedding

Imagine a formal tea in a centuries-old rose garden or castle, a hip event in a refurbished retro movie theatre, or a poolside banquet at your favorite relative’s beautiful home. How about a ball in a Victorian mansion? Call it formal. Call it casual. Either way, it’s only for you.

Off-premises catering offers an attractive alternative to the more common reception choices like hotels and country clubs. By opening up a plethora of options for location, style, theme, size and menu, off-premises catering allows you to create a very personalized and detailed event that can sometimes cost less than many inside catered affairs.

Another big advantage of off-premises catering is the menu itself. With more experience in designing and handling custom menus than restaurants or hotels, off-premises caterers can offer very imaginative, tasty menus. Catering at the location of your choice demands a professional staff with the knowledge and expertise to make sure all the details come together for a smoothly run event.

Of course, don’t forget the biggest item on the menu; the wedding cake. Many caterers have professional in-house pastry chefs who will design a cake your cake especially how you envision it.

If you know you want a personalized event, but don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, some off-premise caterers work closely with various specialty party facilities and can help you decide what’s right for you.

Some also offer free full-service wedding consulting and event planning, providing you with hassle-free planning for everything from flowers and invitations to dining, entertainment and even travel.

Affordably Priced Wedding Dresses at Heirloom Bridal

Bridal Fashion Comments Off on Affordably Priced Wedding Dresses at Heirloom Bridal

Aside from her glow, a bride’s gown is the centerpiece of her special day. When choosing a wedding dress, many factors come into play. Style, fabric, color, size and often most importantly, cost. Budget conscious brides can find a gently used wedding dress for a fraction of the gown’s original retail price. While most bridal gowns are only worn once, some ‘used’ dresses were never even worn once but still cannot be classified as new.

Located in Jacksonville Beach, Heirloom Bridal, is a wedding dress consignment shop with affordable prices for the budget conscious bride that offers a unique shopping experience. They carry new, sample, and once wed bridal dresses. We spoke with owner, Erica Almonte-Wiggins, about her shop and her is what she had to say…..

What do you love the very most about what you do? We love to help brides find their dream dress below retail cost. We also want to create a stress atmosphere for dress shopping.

Will you be on-site during the entire reception until the very end? Yes, I offer my services to assist brides with their dress on their wedding day.

Tell the brides-to- be your best wedding advice. Don’t bring a huge group with you when dress shopping, have a budget, be open minded and try on different styles.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now? One of the wedding trends we love now are intricate hair pieces and veils. Also, lace wedding dressing with beautiful detail and low backs.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry? Stress free and affordable wedding dress shopping.

What is your favorite product or service that you offer brides? Please describe it. We provide beautiful wedding dresses at 50%-70% off retail.

Do you offer any other products or services? We offer bridal accessories and styling if needed.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding? I would say at least a month before the wedding in case alterations are needed.

What are some of your specialties? Our specialty is customer service and creating a stress free experience for our brides.

How long have your been doing what you do? Over five years.

What are 5 adjectives that describe you and/or your business? Friendly, reliable, trustworthy, beautiful, and affordable.

What is the most unique thing you have ever seen at a wedding? We once had a map for a bride’s bustle! She had three layers of dress and we had to bustle each one. It took us about a half hour to bustle her dress after the ceremony.

If you are a bride-to-be, we hope you will come visit our store to see our inventory and the gorgeous gowns we have to offer……At a fraction of the retail price!

Searching for a talented and experienced wedding photographer? Christy Whitehead might be exactly who you’re looking for.

Photography Comments Off on Searching for a talented and experienced wedding photographer? Christy Whitehead might be exactly who you’re looking for.

Jacksonville and surrounding areas photographer, Christy Whitehead of Christy Whitehead Photography spoke with us recently about her business and her love of photography. If you’re looking for a professional and experienced wedding photographer who is truly talented, Christy Whitehead might just be who you’re looking for. Here is what she had to say………

Will you be on-site during the entire reception until the very end? Our packages are based on an hourly rate unless our bride chooses all day. We stay as long as the bride wants us there.

Tell the brides-to-be your best wedding advice.  There are soooo many things I could say!

1-Stop stressing about whether grandma and mom will be happy. It is your wedding day, do what feels right and what you’ll be happy about, you aren’t going to make everyone happy…….no matter what you do.

2-If something goes wrong, just remember as long as you are both there, everything else is just stories to laugh about later!

3-HIRE PROFESSIONALS! To start, a wedding planner. I wrote a blog about why you should hire one and it has some funny horror stories–well they are only funny because they didn’t happen to me or any of my brides! http://www.christywhiteheadphotography.com/why-a-wedding-planner/

The vendors I hear the most complaints about are DJs and videographers. People like to skimp on those two. Ask a wedding planner and photog for their recommendations. I’ve known DJs who don’t tell the photographer when key things are being announced (that’s their job!) and the photographer is shooting something else in another room, etc. DJs get the party going and keep the party going. I’ve seen people try to use an ipod or laptop and they always have issues!

I can capture moments in time, but I can NOT capture voices or movement. Hire a videographer, but hire one that knows how to play well with others.  A great videographer gets moments but can work with me as a team.

4-TRUST your vendors. Please don’t send us a million photos on Pinterest and tell us you want your wedding the SAME way. You need to hire ME because you like MY style, not because you want me to emulate someone else. I can take them as inspiration and try to get something like it, but if you tie me down to a list, I may miss the important and sweet moments that are happening at your wedding.

5-Ask for an unplugged wedding. I have seen guests, an uncle get up and stand right next to the couple to video the entire wedding. Guests jump in the aisle for photos, jockey for position to grab photos during the cake cutting, etc. They are too busy facebooking to enjoy the party and they become a hazard. All of our packages come with a USB of edited images, tell your guests to put away their phones, you’ll be happy to share the pro photos of THEM having fun after the wedding.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry? I guess just being myself. And trying to be classic. My style is very clean editing. I like crisp blacks and clean whites. There’s this hazy color toning that is popular right now, but I feel like in 10 years that will look really dated. I don’t want my images to look dated. I also don’t go by a set list I guess you would say. When I go to a venue, I don’t go searching Pinterest to see what other photographers have done there, I want to see it through my own eyes, through my style. I don’t want to be limited. Plus, with the seasons, things change, I like to be constantly flexible on the wedding day to get the best result.

Do you offer any other products or services?  I can design client’s home art walls, so if they want a collage of canvases over their fireplace, I can take a photo of that fireplace and design it in my software and show them how their images would look. I also offer albums, metal prints (actually printed on metal!) and other items.

Will you have an assistant during the wedding? All standard weddings have two photographers, typically myself and one of my other girls. An assistant is sometimes on site for a couple of hours to help run flowers, rings, details, etc. to make our day flow a little easier.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding? Typically a year out. Some dates fill up well in advance but sometimes there are dates that just aren’t as popular. I only take 30 weddings a year, and I only do 2 in one weekend maybe 2x a year. I don’t want to be exhausted for my next wedding, so I don’t try to cram too many in my schedule.

What are some of your specialties? I enjoy shooting newborns as well. I feel like weddings and newborns are where I get to play and do a lot of creative things. I’ve been featured on Buzz Feed for both a wedding photo and a newborn image both were done in my studio using my Toy Story set I hand designed. I get a lot of Disney/Pixar fans who want me to create special sets for them. I love it.

How long have your been doing what you do? I started in about 2000. My degree is in Journalism, I’ve done a lot of newspaper and magazine work both in writing and photography, that’s how I got my start.

What are 5 adjectives that describe you and/or your business?  I took a design survey on the Home Goods website and it said my style was “sassy.” So I’ll go with that. I love clean lines, pops of color and a bit of the dramatic.

If you would like to discuss or add additional information regarding your business, please do so here:

I’m not that photographer that wears the newest trends and is in heels or cute dresses. I’m kind of a tom boy, but I love pink. I dress comfortably, I want to be able to move, to get on the ground if I need to get the shot and not have to worry about what I’m wearing. I love to laugh with my clients, but I will NOT dance on the dance floor with them like some other vendors. I’m there to do a job, plus I have no rhythm, lol.

Tell the brides-to-be your best wedding advice. The best advice I can give to any couple is to make sure you hire the right vendors and to hire professionals.  The vendors are the ones that make your event a success and it is important so that you can enjoy all aspects of the day.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now? Currently I love the golds. I love that it has come back in style.

Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia Island are top notch when it comes to planning a wedding.

Reception Venues Comments Off on Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia Island are top notch when it comes to planning a wedding.

Amelia Island, FL is unique in so many ways. It is treasured for its long stretches of quiet beaches, natural beauty, unique history and charming seaport character. Located in the heart of this beautiful area are two fantastic wedding venues that are sure to impress you. They are Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia. We spoke with Nigel Teare, the Director of Catering of both properties, and here is what he had to say about them.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now?  I am leery of the word “ trendy”!  Just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it will work.  Good trends are rooted deeply in traditional history- taking the classics and breathing in a fresh perspective.  I love our new menus that reflect our journey with food.  We have worked hard with the concept of New American Cuisine.  It has roots in haute cuisine and takes all that is great about the American Experience, and our diverse culture, and blends them into recipes with great flavors, colors and textures, featuring locally grown farm fresh ingredients.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry? We are getting rave reviews on our menu offerings and when to take that and add it to the beach setting we have here on Amelia Island – you have a wedding site and venue that is hard to pass up on!  Our brides come for a visit and book the same day!

What is your favorite product or service that you offer brides?  Please describe it.  I have never shown a bride the Ocean Club when they didn’t instantly fall in love with the location on the beach- the décor of the room and even the path through the dunes; it hides them from the view of their guests until the last possible moment when they crest the top of the dune leading onto the beach.  Talk about a grand entrance!

What made you decide to work in the wedding industry? My family has been in the hospitality industry since 1945.  I have a long tradition of fine service and management experienced passed down to me along with 20 years of fine foods catering experience in New York City.  I have a great deal creativity and practical knowledge to offer my clients and I love to share it all.

What do you love the very most about what you do? I love to see the beauty of weddings – the bride in her dress – the room set in anticipation with crisp linens – the guests in their fashion – the lights flickering from candles –the smiles on people’s faces.

What is the most creative and unique thing you’ve done at a wedding? That’s hard to say as I always work with each bride specifically, so no two weddings are ever the same.  I’ve never met a bride who didn’t want to do as much creatively to their tastes to dress up their wedding and I’m happy to brainstorm ideas with every bride.

Will you be on-site during the entire reception until the very end?  Yes, I am on-site for each event.

Tell the brides-to-be your best wedding advice.  Remember to be you in all decisions.  Listen to advise from others, consider all things soberly, then make final decisions based from your heart.  You cannot go wrong.

Do you offer any other products or services?  We love to help brides with arrangements where ever we can.  I recently started working with a rental company with a terrific inventory of “special” items that can enhance the décor details of any wedding.  We are happy to get estimates, place orders, make suggestions and coordinate deliveries and pick-ups. We have great relationships with a variety of vendors and are happy to make local recommendations. We offer candlelight packages and limited centerpiece services as well. We even can customize a menu for a bride or groom and we are a great location for Rehearsal Dinners and the morning after Brunch Gathering.  One stop shopping is our goal.

Will you have an assistant during the wedding? Each event is staffed by a banquet manager.  Both our managers have been with us a while and know how to keep the guests happy.  They are there to make sure things run smoothly throughout the event.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding?  Brides start calling for viewings of the Ocean Club about 6 months or more out from the date they are looking to plan. Once that first call comes in then the season will fill up pretty quickly.  So book early.

What are some of your specialties?  Food and Service – that is what we get compliments on from every client.  They love the fact that they can tailor menus specifically to their likes – we don’t have a “set” wedding package with just three choices from each category.  It’s a day to remember and we want you to remember the food- not just the location.

How long have your been doing what you do? I’ve been in the food end of this Industry for 30 years.  All in New York City until last year when I fell in love with Amelia Island!  It is such a beautiful place.  I met the owner of this restaurant in a store in downtown Fernandina and we got to talking food – the rest is culinary history.  I’ve brought my expertise here and changed things up a bit and it is making us beloved amongst  brides, brides mothers and groom’s moms!  I think I’ll stay a while and enjoy the great south.

What are 5 adjectives that describe you and/or your business

Location, location, location…….Fantastic and friendly!
