Wedding Planning Tips – Choosing your Florist and Understanding Wedding Flowers

Flowers, Planning a Wedding, Tips and Opinions Comments Off on Wedding Planning Tips – Choosing your Florist and Understanding Wedding Flowers

Congrats!  You are getting married and you are in the wedding planning process!  Premier Bride Magazine is dedicated to educating you on helpful tips when planning and selecting your wedding vendors!

If you have not figured it out already, there are a lot of different aspects to planning your wedding.  Choosing a florist and picking out arrangements, flowers, and flower décor is an important element to your wedding with many different “moving pats” that effect the price you will pay for your flowers.

At Premier Bride, our mission is to educate brides and grooms on the wedding planning process.  Here are some great tips and things to consider when choosing a florist and selecting your flowers!

Anything with Plants and Flowers, a long time vendor of Premier Bride Magazine and the Premier Bride Expos,  created the arrangements and wrote many of these helpful tips that tell brides and grooms!

Here are some tips about deciding on a florist to use

  • An important consideration is to make sure your florist has a proper cooler to store the flowers in.  Home refrigerators do not hold flowers at the proper temps and will kill your flowers.
  • Ask for references!  Make sure you check out the work that they have done from real weddings.  Remember, anyone can pull pictures off the internet!
  • Just because you see something online or on Pinterest does not mean that it can be duplicated.  Some things to consider, silk flowers might have been used, you don’t know what season it was and the availability of the flowers or what part of the country the image was taken in.
  • Talk to the florist about day of the wedding, make sure they and/or their crew will be there to deliver and fix anything that is needed

Let’s talk about budget!  It is so important to be honest with your florist about your budget.  Almost all wedding can work within any reasonable budget.  It does not mean you will get exactly what  you want, but a true floral professional will be able to present you with comparable alternatives!

  • Ask yourself, are you set on a particular flower or a particular look?
  • There are a lot of elements to determining the price of flowers; time of year and/or the season they grow, the color of the flowers, how many steams you have to order or if there is a minim order
  • The structure of the each arrangement reflects the price
  • The size of the arrangement effects the price
  • The containers of the arrangement effects the price

The bottom line is that a professional, educated florist can present you options.  By being honest about budget and being able to give your florist a vision, they can present you options to make your flowers, bouquets and arrangements for your wedding.

Here are two examples of centerpieces for weddings.  Anything With Plants and Flowers wanted to show similar centerpieces in the same size and color, however, their price is $100 difference because of the flowers.  Remember,  no one is going to know what might be missing in your arrangements!

Owner, Ann LeFiles was on River City Live talking to Eden Kendall about ways to save money when planning your wedding on the First Coast, to see the segment, click here.

Let’s break it down;

Wedding Greenery is the Latest Trend in Wedding Decor

Decor, Flowers, Theme Wedding Ideas, Wedding Trends Comments Off on Wedding Greenery is the Latest Trend in Wedding Decor

It wasn’t too long ago when brides refrained from both excessive greenery and any amount of baby’s breath in their floral arrangements. Generally speaking, when it comes to floral arrangements, flowers get all the “Oohs and Ahhs,” but here’s a recent trend that is sure to give colorful blooms a run for their money: arrangements with greenery. Over-the-top blooms are no longer the only option for wedding décor.  Greenery is everywhere, and you’ll find large bouquets of nothing but baby’s breath. Florists are using everything from magnolia leaves to ivy—even herbs (think basil, parsley, rosemary, mint) in creative ways. Succulents are also huge on this list and can be incorporated in many fun and creative ways.

Using greenery, like ferns, eucalyptus, olive branches, ivies, boxwood shrubs and lily grass, not only give brides a budget-friendly alternative to flowers, but also creates a refreshing and clean look for the wedding day. This is especially beautiful during the Winter and Spring months. Not only is this green wedding theme affordable, it is very chic. Many florists will add clear glass pieces to the look which adds to the overall clean look.

Greenery is no longer bound to one kind of arrangement (i.e. garland). It has expanded to gorgeous bouquets, centerpieces, and even within the wedding day decor. With so many different hues, from forest green to sage, this beautiful color is at your fingertips.

Check out these greenery creations we found to be just gorgeous!

One of the most popular wedding themes is vintage.   Vintage typically refers to a particular harvest or crop of wine, but can also mean pertaining to a high quality past time.  In this case, we mean the latter of the two.  Vintage wedding themes are taking the wedding industry by storm and they will be trending for years to come.  Considering that many of our favorite TV shows and movies have a vintage flair to it, we will continue to see weddings emulate those themes.  Premier Bride of Northeast Florida loves “vintage!”  We live in the South and we do vintage well.  Many of our reception venues in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas also cater to a vintage theme.  Let’s explore “vintage” on the First Coast.

One of the first things to check off your list is a wedding gown, and designers have caught onto the vintage bandwagon.  There are tiers of lace on gowns, along with sleeves, and sweet pearl details.  Along with strings of pearls adorning bride’s necks, birdcages are making a comeback, as well as bridal caps.  Detailed bodices and backs also give dresses a vintage feel.  Gloves and lace boots are also making their way back onto the wedding scene.  The bridal salons in Jacksonville have you covered if you are looking for a “vintage wedding grown”

With a vintage theme you have two really great options; a brooch bouquet or traditional flowers. You can indulge in a gorgeous brooch bouquet, which can be solely made up of vintage brooches from your grandmother, or from an antique store.  Or you can have a florist create vintage inspired bouquets and centerpieces to tie your theme together.  Vintage flower arrangements include a lot of greens.  There are also 3 main flowers that fit the era; roses, freesia and lisianthus.

Decor and Special Touches

You can be taken away in a vintage car, like a Rolls Royce, or swept away by carriage.  You might find yourself in a barn type wedding, adorned with chandeliers and mason jars all over.  Mason jars are extremely popular right now, and can be adorned with lace, or have pictures in them showing family.  Don’t be afraid to find some hat boxes to capture the vintage era you are going for in your wedding.  There are a lot of talented decor companies , rental companies and wedding planners on in the Jacksonville area that can make your vision a reality!

Finding a Florist

Flowers Comments Off on Finding a Florist

Get Creative with Your Wedding Flowers!

Flowers have been used in weddings for hundreds of years and for good reason: they are gorgeous!  Breathtaking bouquets, beautiful centerpieces, fresh boutonnieres… these colorful gifts from nature will give you and your guests a visual feast on your wedding day. Now that Pinterest is a popular wedding tool…many creative inspirations can be found on your tablet!  Your wedding flowers will help set the mood and theme for the entire celebration, so be sure to give this area some time and attention and, most of all, find a fabulous florist.

How to start

Start your research right away, from the first bridal magazine you open to the first bridal Web site you visit, PBJacksonville.com includes beautiful floral photos in the “Gallery.” In a file or on a Pinterest board, collect photos of things you like to share with the florist you select. And don’t forget to establish a clear list of anything you definitely don’t like.

It’s also helpful to have some elements of the wedding established before you meet with potential florists, so that they can offer great advice based on their expertise. Your  wedding gown will certainly influence the style of your event – is it streamlined, modern and simple? Or heavily beaded, traditional and ornate? Also, knowing your wedding colors, ceremony and reception locations, and wedding date will be necessary before your florist can give you any concrete ideas that will match the tone, colors, style and season of your wedding.

Love Flowers, Love Your Florist

Find some potential florists at bridal shows, online or through local print publications such Premier Bride Magazine of North Florida, and select up to four to meet with in person, interviewing more than this could easily get overwhelming! Your goal is to find someone who has a style that you love, a personality that you mesh with, and who is also an organized professional. Make sure your florist has a reputation for being on time because delivery of the flowers is important to your timeline for wedding photos and ceremony time.

Once you’ve selected your florist, he or she can help you determine exactly what you will need for your wedding. To help get you started visit the “Checklists & Questions to Ask” section under “Planning” on www.premierbride.com for questions to ask potential florists, flowers available by season and more. Keep in mind that different flowers are in season at different times….so talk to your local florist about what will work for your wedding day.  For your first planning meeting with your florist, bring the following items: a photo of your wedding dress, photos and other information regarding your ceremony and reception sites, images to show your likes and dislikes, and fabric swatches of your bridesmaids’ dresses and samples of any other wedding colors. And one more thing to bring with you… your budgeted amount! This is quite critical that you share this with your designer, so that they can meet your needs and find the right kinds of flowers at a price you can afford.

Brooch Bouquets by Carole Clifford or BBs by CC

Brooch Bouquets by Carole Clifford  (BBs by CC)

Your wedding bouquets and/or other events where a unique “floral” arrangement is desired

Here is a little bit about Carole and her Brooch Bouquets

I am the only designer of brooch bouquets in Northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.  I provide all the jewelry pieces needed for each bouquet, but I also encourage the brides to ask family members and friends to contribute pieces for their bouquet to create a true family heirloom.

Absolutely adore designing the perfect bouquet for each individual bride. Seeing their eyes light up when they see the final bouquet makes the whole process a delight!!

One bride had brooches from five generations of her family included in her bouquet … a definite family heirloom!  Another bride was given all the pieces for her bouquet by her sorority sisters at a “brooch shower”.

Advice Carole gives her brides…

Relax and enjoy the day, it goes by so quickly.  Having been married for over 40 years helps me to assure the brides-to-be that they too can have a successful marriage!

Pricing on brooch bouquets…

Prices for the bouquets are based on the size and number of pieces that are included in the bouquet.  The petite bouquet (15-25 pieces), usually used for a flower girl is $150; the small (25-35 pieces) is $250; the medium(40-50 pieces) is $400; the large(50-60 pieces) is $500, and the extra-large(65-75 pieces) is $600.

I love encouraging the brides to ask grandparents, aunts, etc. to donate pieces for their bouquet or to ask their bridesmaids to host a brooch shower.

When should a bride contact you?

A minimum of two months prior to the wedding.  This time allows the luxury of several meetings to refine jewelry choices and colors before the actual work begins.  Depending on size, it takes from 6 to 30 hours to design and construct the bouquet.

Do you offer any other products or services?

Brooches can be purchased individually for inclusion in table decorations, cake decorations, bridesmaid gifts, etc.

Meet A Fantasy in Flowers

Flowers Comments Off on Meet A Fantasy in Flowers

Get to know A Fantasy in Flowers, Florist in St. Augustine Florida

Here are some tips and advice from one of the most respected florists in the area!

Once you select your vendors, relax and let them do the “heavy lifting”. They are the experts in their areas and that is why you have hired them. Be sure and use a professional wedding coordinator also. It is well worth the investment and will save you time, money and stress in the long run.

Once a bride has selected her date and her venue we are ready to work with her. She doesn’t have to have every detail figured out, but that is time to sit down with our designer to hold her date, come up with a budget and a color scheme. As a florist, knowing the bride’s venue helps us figure out exactly what flowers will be needed as well as what kind of manpower we’ll need to make that happen—for example some locations require us to use an elevator and other locations have a very limited time frame for which we can set up in.

The only really stressful times for us have to do with the weather. In Florida, especially during the summer, it will probably rain. You must have a back up plan such as a tent over the ceremony area and misters to keep your guests cool if you must have an outdoor ceremony. There are plenty of venues that allow you a great view of the ocean or outdoors while still staying covered and cool. Plus, if you have an outdoor wedding and pay to have petals down the aisle in beautiful designs those can get swept away on a windy day and big floral containers can get knocked over. So it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan!

We love what we do and we truly love our Brides. Once we book your wedding we will always do anything within our power to make our Brides happy. We pride ourselves on our constant monitoring of e-mails and our abilities to respond to all questions in a timely manner. We work with a lot of out of town Brides who we never actually meet until the day of the wedding. Everything is done by e-mail and telephone and always works out wonderfully. If the Bride wants to meet in person we have a created a warm and inviting design studio with its warm orange colors and hand painted embellishments. It seems to put our Brides in a great mood and think creatively to plan the décor for their big day.
