Wedding Venue Highlight: Friday Musicale

Reception Venues, Uncategorized Comments Off on Wedding Venue Highlight: Friday Musicale

Established back in 1890, Friday Musicale is a venue with plenty of history and exquisite character. Located in historic Riverside,  it offers a unique setting for your most special day. With two distinctive buildings to choose from, one is sure to wow you. We asked Jeff S. Tawney, the Venue Rental Manager, a few questions about the venue and here is what he had to say:

What made you decide to work in the wedding industry?  I enjoy helping the Bride’s vision come true.

What do you love the very most about what you do?  No two Weddings / Events are alike.  I enjoy talking to the Bride & Groom and helping plan.

Will you be on-site during the entire reception until the very end?  We have experienced event staff that are on site from start to finish.

Tell the brides-to-be your best wedding advice.   Less is more!  This includes your guest list.  If you have a budget of $10,000, don’t invite 200 people.  You can make more of your dreams and wishes come true with less people and being able to spend money where it counts.  Less can be more with the theme of the room as well.  Don’t overcrowd the space.  Evaluate the space and use it to your advantage.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now?  I can’t say that I have a favorite at this time.  I love the Bride & Groom who are not afraid to think outside the box.  This is YOUR wedding– there are no rules.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry? Honesty & Good Listener.  I also love to share ideas that help the Bride & Groom with planning.

What is your favorite product or service that you offer brides?  Please describe it.  We are a Historical Event Venue.  I love to share the history of our venue.  Friday Musicale was established in 1890 and we are celebrating our 125th Season.  We are a non profit organization.  When you rent our venue, your funds go towards maintaining the Historical Value of our buildings as well as fund various programs such as our Free Concert Series, College Scholarship Program and Community Outreach.

Do you offer any other products or services?  We are a Historical Event Venue.  Your rental includes the Venue, Tables & Chairs and Access to our Kitchen Space.  We set up the tables and chairs and we break them down.  We have great relationships with amazing vendors in Jacksonville that we would love to introduce you to for all of your needs.

Will you have an assistant during the wedding? We are a Historical Event Venue.  Wedding Planner (Professional or Close Family / Friend) is always suggested.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding?  We contract space up to a year in advance.

How long have your been doing what you do?  I have been in the event industry for over 25 years.  I have planned both Corporate & Social events— Everything from Multi Million Dollar Corporate events to the smallest garden social and everything in between.

Affordable Wedding Venues in Jacksonville & Surrounding Areas

Catering & Beverage, Reception Venues, Tips and Opinions Comments Off on Affordable Wedding Venues in Jacksonville & Surrounding Areas

How Not to Break the Bank…

If planning a wedding on the First Coast is a challenge, paying for it can be an even greater one. But don’t despair, here are some insider secrets to help you save money when c choosing  your reception site.

Time of Day

Many wedding venues in the Jacksonville area will  book receptions from noon to 5:00 p.m. or from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, and they may charge extra to host a reception that overlaps both time segments. To save money, choose one of these times. Better yet, choose the earlier time slot. Because evening functions tend to be easily booked, choosing the earlier time may give you negotiating power with the wedding venue, especially if their list price is the same for both time frames.

Hammock Dunes Club in Palm Coast

The Day

Saturday’s are the most expensive day of week to have your wedding, no matter what time of the year it is.  If you really want a particular venue, but the Saturday rate is out of your wedding budget think about having a Friday or Sunday wedding.  Almost all wedding venues have reduced rates for those dates.  Or, if you can get married on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, you can typically get a GREAT deal on your wedding venue space.  Not only will you get a great deal on your wedding venue…but you will probably get a great deal with the rest of your wedding vendors as well!

Horse Stamp Inn in Southern Georgia

Time of Year

The date you choose for your wedding may significantly affect reception cost. Peak months are March, April, May, September, October and November. Saturday evenings in December are generally reserved for holiday parties. Most wedding venues will refuse to negotiate prices during these prime months, and many require a minimum budget be met in order to reserve the space. At other times of the year, however, venues are usually more than willing to haggle.  In the Jacksonville area, the slowest wedding months are during June, July and August…especially for the outdoor wedding venues.

Casa Marina Hotel in Jacksonville Beach

Menu Selection

There are many different types of menu options when deciding what to feed your guests;  buffet, hors d’oeuvres,  food stations or a sit down dinner.  Typically, the buffet is  the most economical choice. Though many new brides assume that a hors d’oeuvres cocktail party will be the least expensive option, often the exact opposite is true. To host a hors d’oeuvres party at mealtime, you should provide 14 to 16 hors d’oeuvres per person. When all of the items are tallied, the total per person cost can be equal to or higher than a plated or buffet meal. Buffet stations also will cut down on the labor cost because they need more servers/cooks for the other options.  Something else to consider is the time of the day the wedding is.  A breakfast meal or lunch menu will be less expensive (typically) then a dinner menu.

Aetna Riverfront in Jacksonville

Beverage/Bar

The largest contributing factor to your overall reception budget is the type of bar you host. Generally, if you are considering hosting a bar for your guests for the full reception (four to five hours), the price can equal or even exceed the meal cost. Many times the venue  will offer an “open bar” package price. These prices are based on a fixed per person cost per hour regardless of the amount consumed. The advantage of the open bar is having a fixed cost to factor into your budget.  If you select a venue that allows you to bring in your own catering a bar service, make sure you ask a lot of questions of what it includes; glassware, dinnerware, linens, servers, etc.

Another way to cut some costs on the bar is only offer beer and wine and possibly a signature drink.

If you need to save money on your open bar, close the bar during dinner, and reopen after the meal. This way you will have bar coverage when it’s needed most.

Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Orange Park, Amelia Island or Southern Georgia the surrounding areas have hundreds of wedding reception options that can fit any budget and price point!  Just make sure that the venue you select is a reputable location that is properly licensed and insured!

Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia Island are top notch when it comes to planning a wedding.

Reception Venues Comments Off on Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia Island are top notch when it comes to planning a wedding.

Amelia Island, FL is unique in so many ways. It is treasured for its long stretches of quiet beaches, natural beauty, unique history and charming seaport character. Located in the heart of this beautiful area are two fantastic wedding venues that are sure to impress you. They are Sliders Seaside Grill and The Ocean Club of Amelia. We spoke with Nigel Teare, the Director of Catering of both properties, and here is what he had to say about them.

What is your most favorite wedding trend right now?  I am leery of the word “ trendy”!  Just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it will work.  Good trends are rooted deeply in traditional history- taking the classics and breathing in a fresh perspective.  I love our new menus that reflect our journey with food.  We have worked hard with the concept of New American Cuisine.  It has roots in haute cuisine and takes all that is great about the American Experience, and our diverse culture, and blends them into recipes with great flavors, colors and textures, featuring locally grown farm fresh ingredients.

What do you do that makes you stand out more so than others in your industry? We are getting rave reviews on our menu offerings and when to take that and add it to the beach setting we have here on Amelia Island – you have a wedding site and venue that is hard to pass up on!  Our brides come for a visit and book the same day!

What is your favorite product or service that you offer brides?  Please describe it.  I have never shown a bride the Ocean Club when they didn’t instantly fall in love with the location on the beach- the décor of the room and even the path through the dunes; it hides them from the view of their guests until the last possible moment when they crest the top of the dune leading onto the beach.  Talk about a grand entrance!

What made you decide to work in the wedding industry? My family has been in the hospitality industry since 1945.  I have a long tradition of fine service and management experienced passed down to me along with 20 years of fine foods catering experience in New York City.  I have a great deal creativity and practical knowledge to offer my clients and I love to share it all.

What do you love the very most about what you do? I love to see the beauty of weddings – the bride in her dress – the room set in anticipation with crisp linens – the guests in their fashion – the lights flickering from candles –the smiles on people’s faces.

What is the most creative and unique thing you’ve done at a wedding? That’s hard to say as I always work with each bride specifically, so no two weddings are ever the same.  I’ve never met a bride who didn’t want to do as much creatively to their tastes to dress up their wedding and I’m happy to brainstorm ideas with every bride.

Will you be on-site during the entire reception until the very end?  Yes, I am on-site for each event.

Tell the brides-to-be your best wedding advice.  Remember to be you in all decisions.  Listen to advise from others, consider all things soberly, then make final decisions based from your heart.  You cannot go wrong.

Do you offer any other products or services?  We love to help brides with arrangements where ever we can.  I recently started working with a rental company with a terrific inventory of “special” items that can enhance the décor details of any wedding.  We are happy to get estimates, place orders, make suggestions and coordinate deliveries and pick-ups. We have great relationships with a variety of vendors and are happy to make local recommendations. We offer candlelight packages and limited centerpiece services as well. We even can customize a menu for a bride or groom and we are a great location for Rehearsal Dinners and the morning after Brunch Gathering.  One stop shopping is our goal.

Will you have an assistant during the wedding? Each event is staffed by a banquet manager.  Both our managers have been with us a while and know how to keep the guests happy.  They are there to make sure things run smoothly throughout the event.

How far in advance should a bride to be contact you before the wedding?  Brides start calling for viewings of the Ocean Club about 6 months or more out from the date they are looking to plan. Once that first call comes in then the season will fill up pretty quickly.  So book early.

What are some of your specialties?  Food and Service – that is what we get compliments on from every client.  They love the fact that they can tailor menus specifically to their likes – we don’t have a “set” wedding package with just three choices from each category.  It’s a day to remember and we want you to remember the food- not just the location.

How long have your been doing what you do? I’ve been in the food end of this Industry for 30 years.  All in New York City until last year when I fell in love with Amelia Island!  It is such a beautiful place.  I met the owner of this restaurant in a store in downtown Fernandina and we got to talking food – the rest is culinary history.  I’ve brought my expertise here and changed things up a bit and it is making us beloved amongst  brides, brides mothers and groom’s moms!  I think I’ll stay a while and enjoy the great south.

What are 5 adjectives that describe you and/or your business

Location, location, location…….Fantastic and friendly!
